同学们,新年好!(Students, Happy New Year!)

Close to 100 Peddie students spent the day in NYC's Chinatown yesterday, joining in the celebration of the Year of the Dragon

The Chinatown trip was so fun! I loved being immersed in crowds and crowds of Chinese-speaking Chinese people who were celebrating the holiday -  both in the restaurant we ate at and on the streets, setting off firecrackers and confetti cannons. I even got to practice my Chinese in the shops I entered!

Best moment: I spoke only Chinese in a shop, and the store-owner responded to my requests without clarifying anything in English; I must have pronounced it right!

In my four years of Chinese study, I have never used as much conversational Chinese as I did on the Chinese New Year trip today. I spoke with native Chinese Peddie students at my lunch table, where I used a lot of words I already knew and my friends taught me a lot of new words!

After lunch, I explored Chinatown with a few friends and even bargained for a purse and a t-shirt in Chinese! While waiting for the bus to pick us up to return to Peddie, I spent some time speaking with our visiting EFZ teacher, Xue Laoshi.

When we got off the bus, I accidentally thanked the bus driver in Chinese because I had been speaking so much Chinese throughout the day. During spring break when I go to China with the Peddie delegation, I will definitely be prepared to converse in Chinese with the people I meet!
