Home away from home: A special celebration

Dr. Jiang, Chinese teacher and Chinese club advisor, describes Peddie's celebration of the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival.

The Chinese Culture Club and the International Student Organization co-sponsored a

Mid-Autumn Festival celebration to observe one of the most important Chinese traditional holidays in the Caspersen History House on Sunday night.

Students from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Vietnam and the United States gathered together and listened to a presentation prepared by seniors Amber Li '15 Sean Han '15, Jerry Li '15 and Grace Gu '15. They shared legends, stories, poems and music that are associated with this important holiday.

“It reminds us of our times with our families,” some international students said to Mrs. Morales, one of the international student organization advisors.

“One of the reasons that I help to organize this event every year is to make Peddie a home away from home for our Chinese heritage students who cannot be with their families around this special holiday”, said Dr. Jiang, the Chinese club advisor. “We are grateful for Mr. Mooney’s support for this important event.”

This was the fourth year that the clubs organized the celebration. All the participants tasted the festival food, known as moon cakes, sang songs and learned how to make paper lanterns before returned to their study hall.
